Sevierville, TN- Today, Sevier County Bank announced that Food for Kids, a program of Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, as its charity of the month for June. This program is designed to provide healthy, easily-prepared food to some of the most vulnerable children in our community—children who may be missing meals on a regular basis. Employee jeans day Friday donations will benefit this organization and the public is asked to join in as well.
Statistics show that 1 in 4 children in the East Tennessee area is at risk of hunger. Similar to other issues that we may not think happens here in Sevier County- unfortunately, it does. Food for Kids (FFK) provides food to approximately 1,000 students in Sevier County EACH WEEK during the school year and around 400 students during the summer.
At participating schools, principals ask their teachers to compile a list of kids in their classroom whom they feel are at risk of hunger. In addition to simply telling their teachers they are going hungry, many participating kids are observed hoarding food from the lunchroom, taking food from other children’s trays, and even taking food from trashcans in order to have something to eat after school and over the weekend.
These children are discreetly given a backpack full of food for themselves (and any siblings they may have at home) every Friday throughout the school year. Summer Food for Kids provides these children with food on a weekly basis at one of our distribution sites every week during the summer.
SCB invites you to join us in bringing awareness to the issue of childhood hunger in our community. We also encourage you to join us as we support FFK to help alleviate this need.
Monetary donations can be made at any SCB location throughout the month of June.
Thank you for supporting Food for Kids, and for helping SCB make a difference in our community!
